Discover Smart Ways to Travel on a Budget

Traveling is one of life’s greatest joys—an escape from the routine, a chance to see new places, meet new people, and experience the world like never before. But let’s face it: traveling can sometimes feel like a financial leap of faith. Flights, accommodation, meals, activities—all those little things add up fast! However, here’s the good news: You don’t have to break the bank to travel. With the right mindset, a bit of planning, and a dash of creativity, you can have the adventure of your dreams on a budget. Ready for some tips? Let’s dive in and travel on a budget!

1. Finding Cheap Transportation

Finding affordable flights, trains, or buses isn’t exactly a secret, but there are some sneaky tricks that will help you grab the best deals. Websites like Skyscanner, Expedia, and Rome2Rio are basically your treasure maps. These sites let you search with flexible dates and destinations, making it ridiculously easy to plan your trip and save big.

Top Tip!
Here’s a juicy little tip: We’ve noticed that booking prices tend to spike on weekends. So, if you’re not tied down to specific dates, try booking your trips mid-week—say, a sneaky Tuesday! And always, always search in incognito mode. It’s like travelling under a secret identity, and it stops websites from tracking you and hiking up the prices.

Watch the offers! Travel companies and airlines release offers and discounted deals from time to time (call it Black Friday for example) so you can save some money booking your next trip.

2. Use Promo Codes or Rewards

Who doesn’t love a good discount? Airlines, hotels, and travel sites have membership programs, and all you have to do is sign up and give them your email. In exchange? Discount deals, flash sales, and sometimes free stuff. Some programs, like Booking.com, let you rack up points or rewards for every booking you make. Sure, you might need tons of points for a free hotel night, but hey, free is free, right?

3. Travel Off-Season/Be flexible

When you’re traveling on a budget, flexibility is your best friend. Most of the time, prices vary dramatically depending on when you go. If you’re not tied to specific dates, you can score some seriously sweet deals. Avoid peak season if possible—the sweet spot for cheap flights and accommodations is usually just before or after peak tourist season. A little off-peak travel can make a huge difference in your budget.

For example, traveling to Europe in the shoulder season (like late spring or early fall) means you get to enjoy milder weather, fewer crowds, and, most importantly, cheaper prices on pretty much everything!

Bonus: fewer tourists = more space for you to roam around like a local, fewer lines, and a more chilled vibe.

4. Planning Ahead vs. Last Minute

So, you’re the type who likes to plan ahead? Or are you a last-minute adventurer, hoping for a great deal? Both options work, but here’s the lowdown.

If you’re an early bird and book 9+ months in advance, you’ll have a good shot at snagging the best deals. Airlines and hotels want to fill their spots early, so early bookings usually mean better prices.

Check Hotellook to compare different hotels and locations!

But if you’re feeling bold, last-minute bookings can be a goldmine. If companies haven’t filled up their flights or rooms, they’ll slash prices to fill those spots. It’s a gamble, though—sometimes you score big, and other times… not so much. If you roll the dice too often, you might end up paying way more.

5. Visit Cheap Destinations

Looking to stretch your budget even further? Choose a destination where the cost of living is lower. Southeast Asia, South America, and certain parts of Europe are like gold mines for budget travelers. Imagine traveling for 2 months in South America for the same price as 2 weeks in North America. Yup, it’s possible! Your wallet will thank you later.

6. Stay with Friends or Family

Here’s the secret: friends and family abroad are your ultimate travel hack. Not only do you get to reconnect with familiar faces (bonus points for good vibes), but you also get to sleep for free! Do you have a friend in Prague or a cousin in London? Time to take that long-overdue trip. You’ll save money, create memories, and have someone show you the city from a local’s perspective. Plus, nothing beats crashing on a couch (or bed!) you didn’t pay for.

7. Sleep in Hostels

Not staying with friends or family? No worries! Hostels are your next best bet and very budget friendly. They’re super affordable and perfect for meeting other travelers. Whether you’re a solo wanderer or just want to make new friends, (you never know when you can meet your soul mate!), hostels are buzzing with like-minded adventurers. The key to scoring a good deal? Share a dorm room! Sure, you might have to sleep with a snorer, but hey, that’s part of the fun. And after bonding over late-night chats, you might just have a place to crash during your next adventure.

8. Use Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is like Tinder, but for travelers—without the awkwardness. You sign up, find hosts who are willing to let you crash on their couch for free, and voilà—instant budget accommodation. In exchange, you can treat your host to dinner or a small token of appreciation, but that’s totally optional. You get to stay with locals who will show you the best spots in the city that no one else knows about. It’s a win-win.

9. Workaway, HelpX, WOOF

For the more adventurous souls, Workaway, HelpX, and WWOOF are like the ultimate travel experiences. These platforms connect you with hosts who need help—whether it’s farming, construction, or running a guesthouse (to mention some)—in exchange for food and a place to stay. It’s the perfect way to see the world, make memories, and not spend a dime. We’ve tried it ourselves, and trust us, it’s a total game-changer and one we’ll always remember.

10. Travel Overnight

Let’s face it: no one wants to pay for accommodation if they don’t have to. Traveling overnight is the best way to save on a night’s stay. Catch an overnight flight, bus, or train, and you’ll arrive at your next destination refreshed and ready to explore—without spending a single penny on a hotel room. It’s like a two-for-one deal: transportation + accommodation!

11. Rideshare

Platforms like BlaBlaCar, Facebook groups, Uber, and Cabify are fantastic ways to save a few bucks while getting around, whether you’re traveling within a city or across a country. The concept is simple: you share the ride with other travelers, and everyone chips in for the cost. In some places, it’s a total game-changer, while in others, it might be hit or miss. But no matter where you are, it’s always a clever option to have up your sleeve when you’re on the move!

Being connected to mobile data might be an advantage while travelling if you are in the need of it. Wifi is available in many places but if you are gonna need an eSim for your travels, take a look at this one that we always use, Airalo. Use the code TRAVEL8205 and get 3€ off your first purchase.

12. Hitchhiking

It’s old-school, but it still works. Hitchhiking might not be as common as it once was, but it’s still one of the best ways to travel for free. Sure, it’s a little risky, but we’ve met some amazing people who were more than happy to help out a fellow traveler. If you’re feeling adventurous and you’re in a safe place, hitchhiking can lead to some epic stories—and who knows? You might just meet your next travel buddy. It’s the ultimate travelling on a budget hack!

13. Public transportation is Your Best Friend

Renting cars and taxis can drain your wallet quickly. Instead, embrace public transportation. It’s often the cheapest and most efficient way to get around, and it’s a great habit to do if travelling on a budget. Plus, it gives you a chance to blend in with locals and see a city from a different perspective. In big cities, use subways, trams, and buses. In smaller towns, try biking or even walking—you’d be surprised at how much you can see when you’re on foot. You’ll save money and get to know the place like never before.

Top Tip!
A lot of cities also offer transport passes that cover multiple modes of transport for a flat fee. So, if you’re planning to explore, go ahead and grab that unlimited pass—it’ll be way cheaper than paying for individual tickets every time!

14. Find Free Activities to Do

Not everything worth doing has to come with a price tag. Many of the best activities in a city are free. Look for free walking tours, museum days, parks, gardens, rivers, waterfalls or local events (Facebook is a great tool to find this kind of activities), concerts, expositions that don’t charge an entry fee. Some of the best memories come from wandering aimlessly around a city and stumbling upon hidden gems—no ticket required! Find your nearest tourist office and they’ll provide you with the most up-to-date events schedule!

15. Cook for Yourself / Buy at the Supermarket

Sure, trying local food is one of the highlights of traveling, but going out for every meal can empty your wallet faster than you can say “expensive restaurant.” So, do yourself a favor: hit the supermarket and stock up on snacks, ready-to-eat meals, and breakfast goodies. And if you’re staying in an Airbnb or hostel with a kitchen, put your chef hat on and cook some meals yourself!

Street food, local markets, and neighborhood diners are also fantastic options to save money, they often offer authentic meals at a fraction of the price of fancy restaurants. Plus, there’s something extra exciting about grabbing a bite from a local vendor and eating with the people who actually live there.

16. Pack Light / Avoid Extra Fees

Here’s a pro tip: the lighter you pack, the more freedom you have. You won’t have to drag around a heavy suitcase, and you’ll dodge those nasty baggage fees. Plus, packing light means more room for souvenirs… or maybe just an extra pair of shoes. Trust us, packing light makes life a whole lot easier and cheaper.

17. Use your Student / Youth Card

If you happen to be a student you might be able to find cheaper deals when traveling just using your student card or youth card from your local youth center. Many museums and attractions offer discounted deals to students, so take advantage of it and show your student card to save a few bucks every time.

Top Tip!
Some places also accept library memberships! Always carry yours in case you have the chance to save those pennies!

18. Prioritise Experiences Over Things

When traveling on a budget, it’s easy to get caught up in buying souvenirs or splurging on pricey activities. But if you really want to make the most of your money, focus on experiences rather than things. Instead of buying that expensive piece of jewelry or an overpriced T-shirt, look for experiences that you’ll remember forever. Hiking to a hidden waterfall, watching the sunrise over a mountain, or having a chat with a local artisan is way more valuable than any trinket.

Take a step back and ask yourself: Will this experience leave me with a story to tell or a memory to cherish? If the answer is yes, go for it—if not, it’s okay to pass.

19. Set a Daily Budget and Stick to It

One of the best tricks for staying on track is setting a daily budget and sticking to it. It sounds obvious, but sometimes it’s easy to get carried away with a few drinks, meals out, or spontaneous purchases. Plan your big splurges in advance (like a tour or a fancy meal), but keep everything else under control. A simple daily budget helps you stay grounded, and if you have a bit of wiggle room, you can treat yourself to that extra activity or snack you’ve been eyeing.

It’s also a good habit to keep track of it and see how it’s going throughout your travel, making sure you are not exceeding it! An useful app to keep track of your budget can be Tricount, which also allows to split costs between your travel buddies!

BONUS TIP!
Travel Slow

Slow travel is like your personal superpower when it comes to saving money. No rush means you can pick and choose between different deals and find the best prices. Want to take the bus in two days instead of the train tonight? Do it! You’re flexible, and that’s how you get the best bang for your buck. It also means more time to soak in the places you visit instead of rushing around, which will give you the chance to meet more local people to get the best recommendations of the area and how to get the best deals anywhere you go, plus you’ll get to know the place in much more depth.
